THE RULES OF YOUR MIND

It’s no secret that modern’s society’s most comment mental challenge is in the anxiety group (according to WTO) including mood disorders, eating disorders, depression and panic attacks.

But the truth is you will not wake up, you will not receive a surge of motivation, you will not make a change unless you want it first. You will not do it if you’re asked nicely, if you’re reprimanded nor if you’re provoked. You will not take this first step if you’re approached with reason, emotion nor support. The only way for you to change, to really see and to be filled with a desire for something more is when you realize that you need all that and you want to achieve it.

So realizing that you and only you are in control of your own happiness and fulfilment might be a bit shocking but strangely liberating, right? So next time you feel that anxiety in your life or you catch yourself lighting another cigarette or eating that cake in one slice, stop and really think about the core of the emotion and what are you healing really. Because fixing or fighting the symptoms will only give you short term and peripheral results. What you need to do is have the most important conversation of your life…the conversation with yourself.

There are three ways in which our minds work:

  1. The way we feel about everything is down to the pictures we make in our own heads and the words we say to ourselves.
  2. The mind is hard-wired to resist anything unfamiliar and to keep running back to what is familiar.
  3. Your mind does what it thinks you want it to do, and it only works out what you want by the words you use.

So keeping the above in mind, you now have three techniques you could use to improve the quality of our thoughts and really be mindful in your everyday practices. Because making a change in your

thoughts => emotions => actions => results

And the only reasons we might be hesitating is because we might feel we are not enough or because we fear being judged. We’ll talk more about those later on but for now, think about the three rules of the mind and install the following practices:

  1. Start seeing the glass as half full as opposed to half empty. We have talked about this before but the viewpoint you have on your life and on yourself will govern the way you see the world. Will you see a failure as a reason to give up or as a learning experience?
  2. You need to be persistent in your unfamiliar goals. Understand how whatever it is that you’re striving for is different from what you’re used to and use that to your advantage, use it to be determined and to tirelessly follow your objectives.
  3. Be extremely mindful of the words you use because they all become a blueprint. When you say to yourself that your kids are driving you crazy or that you always mess things up, your mind hears those words, believes them and you are more likely to make those things happen. On the contrary if you say to yourself that you are great, that you are leading a happy and fulfilled life than that’s what will be. Look for Name it to Tame it exercise in the ‘Downloadable’ section to learn more about how proper labeling of your emotions can help you control them.

We all perceive the world through our senses and formulate stories. The human brain cannot live without a story and creates one every 90 seconds. Not sure about that – think of the last time your phone rang and it was your boss for instance. How quickly did the different possible scenarios of why he’s calling you formed in your head? How about when you passed by a car accident on the road. How many stories did you consider of possible causes for that scene?

The stories that we tell and the pictures that we perceive formulate our thoughts and namely the thoughts that we have govern our feelings, our actions and ultimately our results. Even now that you’re reading this article, you are not forming the different words or parts of the text in your mind, rather your mind is painting a picture (or a few) for you.

So do you want to have a happy and fulfilling life: think about it, say it to yourself, feel you’re living it and soon enough the actions you take will lead to result of exactly that!

You need to be consistent and persistent though…because clarity + consistency = results!
